Navy set to commission USS Omaha

The USS Omaha is set to be commissioned. The formal ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, February 3rd in San Diego.

The Navy calls it the newest Independence-variant littoral combat ship (LCS), the future USS Omaha (LCS 12).

New Navy working uniform rollout starts this fall

The Navy announced a two-year rollout plan for putting the new Navy Working Uniform Type IIIs in every sailor’s seabag.

The transition goes into effect Oct. 1 and ends on the same date in 2019, when everyone in the service will be required to have the green uniform in their seabags — and the current “blueberries” will be no more.

Weird Navy traditions and their meanings

A recent Navy Times article notes that the crew of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) joined the “Order of the Blue Nose” — a distinction reserved for ships and crew that crossing the Arctic Circle.

Most people have not heard of such a mystical Navy order, and there are others that are equally shrouded in seafaring lore, according to a list maintained by the Naval History and Heritage Command.
