Run for the Fallen

All, if you know of runner who might want to participate, please forward to them.

Please pass this along! www.runforthefallen.org PLEASE REGISTER TO RUN.

This is how the nationwide run will work –

Each day’s run will encompass approximately 50 miles. There will be a pre-staked Hero Marker to identify our stops for every mile each day. The marker will have a specific date and time that the runners will arrive. The timing is very specific and will be listed by mile number at specific intervals. Between 10 to 12 minutes between each mile. A small core team of four minimum physically trained athletes (16 per day),  running approx. 9-10 minute miles, will arrive at the designated time (or as close as possible). When runners arrive at the hero marker they will be carrying three 3×5 flags as well as the names of each hero. American Stars and Stripes, the flag of the State we are in and the Honor and Remember Flag. The runners will stop at the marker and will come to attention, read the rank, name, branch of service and date of death of each hero. They will place the Bio just read, alongside the Hero Marker, step back, come to attention and salute. Runners will take turns carrying and placing the bios. After salute the runners will pay respects to waiting immediate family members if present with a hug. Retrieve flags from those holding, if present) and then begin next mile. This will be accomplished in 90 seconds or less. There will be no hesitation, other families are waiting ahead. Each mile is tentatively planned for 10-15 minutes apart.  Families can fellowship before and after runners arrive at that mile with advance team and each other.

America’s Run will bring tribute to every service member who died since the USS Cole. Starting April 7, 2018 at Fort Irwin, CA, the run will cross nineteen states and over 6000 miles. The plan is to run one mile intervals stopping at pre-placed hero markers and reading the names of specific fallen at each marker. Mile after mile across the nation stopping each night for planned ceremonies, we will be reaching the gates of Arlington National Cemetery, depending on the number of future casualties, sometime within 120 days of the start.

VA Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War

MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY

VA Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War

In 2017, President Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act designating March 29 of each year as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.  Our Nation’s Vietnam War Commemoration is an opportunity for all Americans to recognize, honor, and thank our Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice during one of the longest wars in our country’s history.

As a commemorative partner, VA joins nearly 10,000 organizations across the Nation supporting the Department of Defense in this mission to honor and thank our Vietnam Veterans.  I encourage all VA leaders to either host ceremonies or participate in community events during the period March 25 – 29, 2018, to express our tremendous gratitude to this generation of warriors and their families.

The commemoration recognizes all men and women who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces during the United States’ involvement in Vietnam—November 1, 1955 – May 7, 1975.  Nine million Americans, approximately 7.2 million living today, served during that period.  The commemoration makes no distinction between Veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or were stationed elsewhere during those 20 years.  All answered the call to duty.

Please visit www.vietnamwar50th.com to learn how your organization or facility can become a commemorative partner and participate in this commemoration.  VA currently sustains more than 400 commemorative partnerships, and I am so proud of their contributions to honor and thank our Vietnam Veterans.  Importantly, a partnership provides historical media and the ability to request beautifully struck lapel pins and other recognition items for presentation to Vietnam Veterans.

Thank you for your continued service to VA and America’s Veterans.

David J. Shulkin, M.D.

Central Nebraska Veterans Memorial

A project Veterans Service Clubs are working on in Central Nebraska.

The Central Nebraska Veterans Memorial will be built on site at the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney. As you can see reading the press release, this is a massive project which will require the efforts of local communities, businesses, citizens and Veterans Service organizations to complete.

Fundraising to date from veterans organizations alone has produced over $80,000 (60k from American Legion Post 52 in Kearney, and over 20k from Broken Bow VFW/Legion). To date we have over $800,000 raised or pledged towards a goal of $2 million. The news release I have attached has been provided to the state American Legion magazine and to the Nebraska Press Association (which produced a state wide press release to every newspaper in Nebraska).

Our goal is to challenge other Veterans Service clubs in Nebraska to educate themselves about this project and support it financially.

National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2017 UPDATE

The National Defense Authorization Act would be good for those that like to keep up on the lastest news that might affect us

The much-anticipated annual defense authorization bill cleared a House-Senate Conference Committee late last week and includes the following key points of interests for Reservists and National Guard members:

  • Establish a $700 billion defense authorization plan for fiscal 2018
  • 2.4 percent pay raise for all Active/Reserve/National Guard members
  • Boost military end strength by more than 20,000 service members, to include:
    • 8,500 new soldiers (7,500 in active duty, 500 each in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve)
    • 5,000 new sailors (4,000 in active duty, 1,000 in the reserves)
    • 5,800 new airmen (4,100 in active duty, 900 in the Guard, 800 in the Reserve)
    • 1,000 new active-duty Marines
  • Permanent extension of the Special Survivor Indemnity Allowance, which pays about $300 a month to military widows and widowers to offset other lost benefits (which were set to expire in May 2018)
  • Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) will remain untouched for now
  • Adds 90 new joint strike fighters to the military’s fleet and a third new littoral combat ship, but cancels controversial plans for a new “Space Corps” in favor of less ambitious bureaucratic changes within the Defense Department’s space programs.

Lawmakers on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees have maintained for months that a sizable boost in defense spending is needed to keep up with military readiness and modernization shortfalls.

The U.S. House and Senate will still need to approve the conference committee legislation in the coming weeks by an up-or-down vote. The president has stated he will support the legislation.   READ HERE>
