Local veterans given free cars

A couple of area veterans got a chance to celebrate Veterans Day a little early this year.

Every year of the past five years Progressive Insurance has given away refurbished vehicles. Each car comes with a one-year warranty and six months of insurance. This year Progressive awarded two cars to two local veterans.

“So many veterans get overlooked and something like this it didn’t happen to them it happened to me it’s really for all of them. It shows America does care,” said veteran Keith Edgington.

“My last car has more than 200 thousand miles on it, so having something I know is dependable is going to make everything just so much easier,” said veteran Rachel Keller.

This year Progressive will give away 100 vehicles at its 71 locations across the country. Over the last five years Progressive has given away more than 500 vehicles

The last of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders from World War II turns 102 years old

Of the 80 Doolittle Tokyo Raiders, retired Lt. Col. Richard E. “Dick” Cole is the only one alive today. On Thursday, Cole turned 102.

Earlier this year in April, Cole took part in a 75th anniversary ceremony at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. He commemorated the anniversary of the raid by continuing a tradition of raising a silver goblet with 1896 cognac and toasting to his fallen comrades.

Congress plots to create new ‘Space Corps’ branch to the military

The House Armed Services Committee recently approved a version of the 2018 military budget that includes the creation of a sixth military branch — the Space Corps.

Today, the military consists of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force. A new branch has not been added since the Air Force in 1947.

According to the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, the Space Corps would take over duties currently handled by the Air Force and its Space Command. Then, it would relate to the Air Force in the same way the Marine Corps relates to the Navy.
